Introduction

Naturally small leaves and fine branching give Chinese Elm a wonderfully convincing miniature-tree appearance. The broom-style canopy creates a balanced miniature-tree silhouette. It is supplied in an approximately 15cm pot.

Chinese Elm responds well to regular light pruning, making it a rewarding tree for learning how to develop a canopy. Its leaf cover changes with temperature and growing conditions, so seasonal leaf loss can be normal.

Position & light

Give plenty of natural light. Indoors, choose a bright window position away from radiators and fireplaces. Acclimatise gradually when moving outdoors, and avoid repeatedly switching between warm rooms and cold outdoor conditions.

Watering

Check the soil frequently and water thoroughly as the upper layer begins to dry. Let excess water drain away. Do not allow the root ball to dry hard or leave the pot standing in water.

Feeding & pruning

Use a suitable bonsai fertiliser during active growth, following the label. Trim extending shoots to maintain the outline. Assess repotting in spring according to root development and drainage, rather than automatically repotting every year.

Winter care

Trees grown cool may lose some or all of their leaves. Protect the pot from prolonged hard frost. Indoor trees still need strong natural light and should be kept clear of central heating.
